Willow {Beagle cross} - ADOPTED

Willow is an adorable 12 week old beagle with very typical beagle traits.

She is happy and inquisitive all of the time, loves food, loves to sleep, and always has her nose to the ground.  She is very cute, and playful, but not as hyper as some puppies.  She is working on her housetraining and manners in the house, but as with all puppies, she has had accidents.

Beagles require very special owners.  Willow would do best in a home that can provide her with a lot of mental stimulation - bored beagles often equal mischievous behavior!  She will be a small dog (probably 25 lbs), but will have the exercise needs of a large dog.

And beware:  beagles have been known to outsmart their owners!  Willow will need training and discipline, as she is already easily tempted by food.

And, like a hound, she will follow her nose so you may never be able to take her off leash.

But, she also has the amazing qualities of beagles, too:  she is up for anything!  Do you want to sleep all day? – sure!  How about an extra long hike? – you bet!  Are you having friends over? – Willow loves people (and dogs, too)!  Car rides, bike rides, walks, naps, or basically any activity where she can be right by your side, and Willow is a happy little pup!

For more information on Willow, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

Fetching Machine

Lily the border collie has been settling nicely into her foster home.

We don't think she has spent much time in a house before. She doesn't seem to know all the things we assume most adult dogs know.

For example, she has tried to stick her head in the hot oven, she was startled by the sound of a computer turning on and jumped when the furnace turned on for the first time.

Once she realizes that the world is not ending, and that no one else is concerned by these "scary" noises, she settles down quickly and the same noise doesn't bother her next time she hears it.

She is a really playful girl who likes to play fetch as well as wrestle with other dogs.

She is a really fun, playful girl that would prefer an active, yet quieter household.  At this point we think that kids might be a bit of sensory overload for her.

If you think Lily might be the girl for you, please contact us to find out more about her!

For more information on Lily, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

Thank You!

Windy City Rescue has some of the best volunteers I've come across in rescue. A few months ago our Volunteer Coordinator, Breeanne, had an idea to do a gift basket project with elementary school kids in our hometown. This project had classes collect items for a specific rescue dog such as blankets, toys, beds, treats etc. Then we brought the dog into the classrooms to receive their baskets and talk to the kids about rescue.
The teachers, kids and their families who participated in this project were truely amazing. We collected so many great items that we are planning on donating some to other rescues in town. The thoughtfulness and generosity that went into these baskets was really heartwarming. It's hard to imagine that some of these dogs come into rescue with nothing, not even a single blanket after being with a family for years, but it happens more often then not. Its a great moral booster to see that there are people who care in our community and to know that each of our foster dogs have new gifts for Christmas.

A special thanks to

Megan McMillan's grade two class at Mike Mountain Horse
Lori Cholka's Kin-2 classes at Fleetwood Bawden
Carlie Ramotowski's grade 1 class at Fleetwood Bawden
Emily Boutland's grade 2 class at Park Meadow's
Bonny Wiebe's grade 2 class at Senator Buchanan
Sue Howg's grade 2 class at Senator Buchanan
Miss Craddock's grade 2 class at Mike Mountain Horse
Mrs. Nelson's grade 2 class at Mike Mountain Horse
Mrs. Van Roon's grade 2 class at Mike Mountain Horse
Miss Tsentouros's grade 2 class at Mike Mountain Horse

Thank-you to all those families who participated and the kids who kept us entertained with your questions and enthusiasm!

Lily {Border Collie} - Adopted

Lily is a friendly, happy girl! She just came from a great shelter in Brooks, AB where she has spent way too long looking for a new home.  We are hoping we'll have better luck finding that perfect home for her.

She gets along great with most dogs, but she can be a little shy with the initial meeting. Lily seems to have not been socialized or interacted with much in her last home, but she's learning fast!

When Lily first arrived in Brooks, she didn't even know how to play - but they fixed that with no problem! Lily is a little shy when meeting new people, but it doesn't take much for her to warm to you.

We'll update you with more information about her as we get to know her a little better.

For more information on this dog, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

April Update - ADOPTION PENDING

We got an update the other day from April's foster home:
When we got April, we weighed her, and she was about 26 lbs. She seems to be getting a little thinner, and already she has a lot more spring in her step. She has been very good once she got into an outside bathroom routine. She must have been fed a lot of table scraps, because she begs when I am cooking ALL THE TIME. All in all, she is an amazing dog, and very very sweet. Someone will definitely enjoy having her for a pet! She loves to go for car rides, and whenever you let her out, she automatically runs to the car door to see if you are taking her for a ride.
I'm sure she is not enjoying her diet, but it sounds like distracting her with car rides will make her happy.

For more information on April, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

Chai {Pit Bull Cross} - ADOPTED

Chai is a beautiful girl that came to us from shelter in the US because her time was up.

She is incredibly well trained and very smart.  After a few days she already has learned her new name and she already knew how to sit, lay down, shake a paw, roll over and "go to your bed".  She is also housetrained.

She is very playful with both people and other dogs but is also very quick to mellow out when play time is over.  She has what we call a great "on/off switch"!  She is a very fun dog to have around and as you can see she has a pretty good time out in the snow.  :)

She is very quiet and rarely barks and is very good in her crate.  Her only fault is her bad leash manners.  She definitely needs some training in this department but with how quickly she has learned everything else, we have no doubt she'll be great at this in no time!

She is very affectionate and loves to snuggle. She'll try and smear herself all over you when you give her the chance.

Chai would make a great dog for a person or family that is a little more on the active side as this girl does like to go.  She needs regular walks and active play time, but she also loves to just hang out in the house.

PS - She is way prettier in person than these pictures show!

For more information on this dog, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

April {Miniature Dachshund} - ADOPTION PENDING

May we introduce April....

She is a very sweet, very overweight, 8 year old dachshund.

She is housetrained, good with kids and is quite mellow.

Needless to say we have her on a diet and we think once she loses a little weight there will be more spring in her step.

She would do great with a laid back person or family who likes ambling walks, watching tv and generally just hanging out.

For more information on April, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

Micah {Lab cross} - Adopted

Micah is a 6-8 year old lab cross that was almost euthanized yesterday (until a wonderful vet clinic refused to do it and contacted us instead) and may just be the world's politest dog.

No matter how excited she gets she doesn't jump, instead she sits nicely at your feet.... and slowly inches closer if you don't respond with a pat.

She doesn't bark.  In the 24 hours we've had her, we haven't heard her bark once.

She is great with cats - her foster home's cat came up and sniffed her all over and she just sat still like a statue.  I think she was a little stunned that a cat would come so close.

She doesn't jump up on the furniture.

She is completely house trained.

She gets along great with other dogs.

For the life of us, we can't imagine her not being the perfect fit for almost any home.

For more information on Micah, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

Piper {Rottweiler/Terrier cross}

Piper is a three year old Rottweiler/Terrier cross. She is an incredible dog who deserves an incredible home. Piper is a great dog that would make not only a great family pet, but an amazing athlete as well. She is very well behaved at home - calm, obedient, and respectful. Outside she can run for miles. She LOVES to run the coulees, and is a great jogging partner. She also does well running alongside the bike.

Piper has a great temperament and is kind, gentle and loving towards people. She loves everyone she meets. She is very snuggly (often tries to sit in your lap) and loves to cuddle in the morning. She is great with kids, and seems to really enjoy their attention.  She has had a lot of obedience training and is well mannered. She can sit, down, stay, come, shake a paw,  go to her bed, and more.

She is not without her issues though - Piper has issues with other dogs. This will need to be managed for the rest of her life. She is reactive to them on leash, and is not predictable with them off leash. The issue seems to be mostly her thinking that she needs to protect her owner. As long as her owner is not around she is fine - she even goes to doggy daycare! But on a walk it is a different story. She is used to walking on a halti and does really well, but she certainly needs work in this department.

Piper would do best as an only dog, but is great with cats. She would like to have her own family to love- kids included. She would also make an ideal companion for someone who likes to camp, hike, jog, or for someone wanting to do agility with their dog. She is certainly athletic enough! Really all she wants is someone to love her unconditionally. She is certainly deserving of it.

For more information on Piper, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.
